Why AI Won't Replace QA Engineers (But Will Redefine Them)
There's a popular take floating around that AI will make QA engineers obsolete. I've spent the last two years building an AI-powered testing platform, and I think this take is wrong — but not for the reasons you'd expect.
The automation trap
Most people confuse "automating test execution" with "automating quality assurance." They're fundamentally different things.
Test execution is mechanical: click this, assert that, check the response code. An LLM agent with access to Playwright can do this reasonably well today. We've proven it at Bugster — you write a YAML spec, and our agents generate and run E2E tests.
But quality assurance is a judgment call. It's knowing that the checkout flow technically works but the UX is confusing. It's catching that the error message says "Something went wrong" instead of telling the user what to do. It's understanding context that no spec can capture.
What actually changes
The QA engineer of 2026 doesn't write Selenium scripts. They:
- Define quality criteria in natural language
- Review AI-generated test suites for coverage gaps
- Investigate the edge cases that automated systems flag but can't resolve
- Own the feedback loop between user behavior data and test strategy
This is more strategic, more interesting work. The repetitive parts get automated. The thinking parts get amplified.
